Masoor dal is also cheaper, fetching Rs 55-60 per kg in retail and 52 per kg in wholesale. Two months ago, it cost around Rs 90-100 a kilogram.

The government has started procuring moong from farmers at minimum support price or MSP. Its aim is to provide more opportunities to farmers and promote crop diversification. According to the government, moong yield is expected to be five quintals per acre. Farmers have been able to harvest more than five quintals of moong. The government has started procuring moong at the MSP of Rs 7,275 per quintal.

The Punjab government has declared Markfed and Cooperative Societies as state nodal agencies for procuring the crop. The government has notified 40 mandis to procure moong. The government will then credit the farmers’ bank accounts with the money. As a result, Punjab’s farmers will have more money to spend on other necessities, such as beef. Besides, the state government is committed to helping farmers diversify their crop yield and increase soil health.
